Wood County Historical Center & Museum to host Barn Dance June 10
Events

Wood County Heritage Days celebrates Wood County’s rich farm history with a new element this year - a public Barn Dance on Friday, June 10, from 7-11 PM in the Pole Barn at the Wood County Historical Center & Museum, 13660 County Home Road in Bowling Green.

Local caller, Doug Michaels, started calling in the 1980s as a BGSU student. He was involved with the collegiate 4-H Club and, along with other state-wide members, decided to start a Western Square Dancing Club called the "Footloose Falcons." Doug is well-versed in the hundreds of different calls, but, for beginners, will limit it to some basic Eastern Square Dancing, affectionately known as "swap and swing."

Beginner and advanced dancers are welcome. There will be square, round, and line dances. Refreshments will be available.

The history of barn, square, and round dances can be pulled from a variety of European cultures, but what is certain, is that these "call-and-response" dances have been finessed into a cultural tradition. Dance enthusiasts know the rhythms and patterns as well as a favored recipe, and see the ritual as a fun activity and good fellowship with other members of the community.

Advanced reservations can be made by calling the Museum at 419-352-0967. For advanced reservations, admission is $8 per person, $10 per couple, and children age 12 and under free. Admission at the door will be $10 per person, $12 per couple.

The Barn Dance kicks off the 27th annual Wood County Heritage Days at the Wood County Historical Center & Museum, which continues throughout the weekend from 10 AM - 5 PM. The weekend features the Power of Yesteryear Antique Farm & Tractor Show, historic demonstrations, live animals, live music, and lots of family fun. A complete list of activities is available at www.woodcountyhistory.org.
